Bridges, great and small are among the marvelous engineering breakthroughs in history. They are useful in many ways to make our lives easier, especially in going to and fro places, where only bridges can get us there.

All over the world are majestic bridges, but only a few hit the marked as among the best in terms of the longest, widest, tallest, most photographed and longest covered bridges. Below are the five world's greatest bridges. Read on to learn more why these bridges are unique from their kinds.

Tallest -  Millau Viaduct: In southern France, a small province, Millau is only known for its heavy traffic every  Summer when tourists travel to Spain vacation destinations. But some 17 years ago, the local government of Millau thought of constructing a bridge to ease the problem in traffic, connecting southern France and Spain. As a result, the Millau Viaduct attracted more tourists to the region. Millau Viaduct quickly became a major tourist area, standing 1,125 feet from the ground and held up by pylons measuring up to 803 feet high. No wonder this architectual masterpiece is the tallest of all.   

Longest Bridge -  Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge is the longest bridge in the world stretching about 102.4 miles. This railroad bridge was recently opened to the public in June 2011 and is expected to serve more than 80 million passengers every year.   Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge is just one of the 11 longest bridges in the world constructed in China as part of the $33 Billion-dollar Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway project.

Widest Bridge - Harbour Bridge in Sydney ranks number one in terms of being the widest bridge in the world. Measuring 160 feet wide, this suspension bridge has 8 lanes of traffic, 2 railroad paths, a pedestrian lane, and a bicycle lane.

Most Photographed - Golden Gate Bridge, famed for its signature "international orange" color and frequently foggy skylines is the favorite among all tourists, both local and foreign.

Longest Covered - Hartland Covered Bridge. In New Brunswick, Canada you will find the longest covered bridge in the world. Extending about 1,282 feet long, this covered bridge established in 1901 was actually constructed by a group of individuals known as John River.
