A cultural heritage that's only been known to the world in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham, Machu Picchu, often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas" is among the top tourist destinations in the world.

Towering at about 7,900 feet above sea level, this pre-Columbian Inca site, atop the Andes was regarded as a religious site for the incas, and was built as an estate for their emperor Pachacuti. Since this ancient site was not discovered during the Spanish occupation, Machu Picchu remained relatively intact as a cultural heritage site, preserved to this day the polished dry-stone walls, and its three major structures, the Intihuatana, the Room of the Three Windows and the Temple of the Sun.

The Intihuatana, is a famous astronomical structure which has been used by the Incas to measure the movements of the sun, and it has for many years have exactly predicted equinoxes to which during these "captured moments", the sun sit still on top of the Intihuatana, and the whole Inca tribe would perform rituals, of songs, dances and offerings.

If you will visit Machu Picchu in June to August, you would expect to see thousands of tourists and visitors from all over the world. So it is best to visit this UNESCO World Heritage site at an off-peak season, or book your vacation to Peru earlier at Destination 360 so you can have all the options available at your choosing.
